9 pm/ET HBO New John Adams, the second U.S. president, is often dismissed as a monarchist, which is somewhat ironic considering he was an outspoken champion of liberty in throwing off the shackles of tyrannical English colonialism in the American Revolution. Whatever the case, he certainly received the royal treatment from HBO in this terrific, seven-part miniseries that concludes tonight. Now officially retired from public life at the dawn of the 19th century, Adams suffers a series of personal losses, but he manages to find some solace in the December of his years through a renewed correspondence with Thomas Jefferson. —
