9 pm/ET CBS New Should an 8-year-old deaf boy receive a hearing implant that could possibly allow him to understand speech and sound? That's the key question at the heart of this earnest but plodding 2008 Hallmark Hall of Fame drama. Marlee Matlin and Jeff Daniels are superb as Laura and Dan, the boy's parents, who bitterly disagree over the implant, which leads to their separation. (The movie begins at a custody hearing and unfolds in a series of flashbacks.) Laura is deaf. Dan is hearing. She believes her son is fine as is and doesn't want him to abandon deaf culture. Dan, on the other hand, wants to give his son every opportunity available and open up to him the world of sound. Unfortunately, no one ever asks the boy what he wants. The subject is important and surprisingly complex, and parents struggling with the dilemma will find much here with which to identify. Viewers searching for first-rate drama, however, will likely tune out. —
