Possibly Britain’s most popular and acclaimed show ever, Only Fools And Horses (titled after the phrase “only fools and horses work”) began in 1981 and was initially panned. It would go on to pull an audience of more than 24 million for a 2002 Christmas special and be voted the best British sitcom of all time. Only Fools And Horses followed two streetwise brothers – brash cockney husker Del (David Jason) and his 12-years-younger sibling, Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) Trotter. The premise centered on Del’s aspirations to build a better life and achieve financial freedom and also focused on the relationships between himself and his family. Rodney had never known his father and could not remember his mother, who had died when he was a baby, and so he’d been left in the care of his shady but devoted brother. Much of the show’s popularity stemmed from the relationship between Del and Rodney. At the start of the series, the two harmless black market traders lived in a council flat in Peckham, London with “Grandad” (Lennard Pierce), who would be replaced after his unexpected death during the show’s production in 1984. His replacement was Uncle Albert (Buster Merryfield), a World War II vet who spouted stories of combat at every opportunity. While the brothers tried to scrape by on money gotten from selling stolen goods, Del optimistically continued to plot more scams to support “Trotters Independant Traders PLC”, often manipulating Rodney into participating in his schemes. Support came from Tigger (Roger Lloyd-Pack), a once-sharp villain-turned-road sweeper who was now laughably dim-witted, and Boycie (John Challis), a sleazy used car salesman. Other characters included Marlene (Sue Holderness), Denzil (Paul Barber), Micky Pearce (Patrick Murray) and Mike the Landlord (Kenneth MacDonald). During the show’s run, actress, Racquel (played by Tessa Peake-Jones), came to live with Del, and Rodney married city banker Cassandra (played by Gwyneth Strong). Eventually, Raquel had a son by named Damien. The show would run for 33 half-hour episodes, 13 50-minute episodes, and 8 specials. It won the BAFTA TV Best Comedy award in 1989 and was also honored by the National Television Awards and the Royal Television Society.
