Captain Kirk wouldn’t have lasted a minute with the craziness aboard the Red Dwarf. This International Emmy and British Comedy Award-winning science fiction comedy ran from 1988 until 1999 on BBC2 and was set on an enormous space mining craft called (can you guess?) the Red Dwarf. Its entire crew (save for one) wiped out by a radiation leak three million years ago, the Red Dwarf was now home to one survivor , Dave Lister (played by the excellently-accented Liverpudlian, Craig Charles), the ship’s technician and last living human. By technician, we mean he was the guy who fixed the chicken soup machine. He was also an immensely lazy bum. However, he was not completely alone. The ship’s now-defunct central intelligence system, HOLLY (played by Norman Lovett and Hattie Hayridge), is also on board, as is a flamboyant and vain humanoid life form that evolved from Lister’s pet cat named Cat (Danny John-Jules), a neurotic service robot named Kryton (Robert Llewellyn), and a hologram simulation of his pompous boss and bunkmate from 3 million years ago, Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie). Although a computer-generated ghost to keep Lister from going insane, the fussy and cowardly Rimmer often drives Lister to near insanity. Often peppered with amusingly-cheesy special effects, the show followed Lister as he longed to return to Earth and the enemies and other dangers he faced while lost in deep space. The show’s fictional cuss word, “smeg”, went on to catchphrase status. During its run, the crew of the Red Dwarf encountered multiple new characters, including Lister’s ex-girlfriend. The last episode saw Lister facing death himself. Standing face-to-face with him, Lister knees him in the groin and runs away. John-Jules was actually a dancer for 80s pop group, Wham! During an American tour and also sang backup vocals on David Bowie’s “Chilly Down” (from The Labyrinth soundtrack), both suitable duties, given Cat’s glam persona. Charles went on to appear in the popular British soap opera, Coronation Street. Barrie has since appeared in both Tomb Raider films, starring Angelina Jolie. The show’s reruns have aired in the U.S.
